Broom Girl
c1830
At first look, it’s difficult to appreciate that this woman was such a huge influence on the role of women in theatre and in stagecraft generally in the 1840s.
Here she is depicting one of her most popular characters. Take a closer look at what she is holding and try to work out what they could possibly be.
In 1826 the actor Elizabeth Vestris popularised the song ‘Buy a Broom’ and sang it on stage dressed as a Bavarian broom seller. It was hugely successful.
The London Tatler described Vertis as the ‘best actress that ever sang’ and this is reflected in the numerous engravings and models depicting her.
In a time when women were denied autonomy, Vestris became the first woman to operate a theatre and was a successful businesswoman. She led a rich, exciting life.
