Plate
Made by A J Wilkinson Ltd; Clarice Cliff, 1933.
This rectangular plate is bold and colourful. Notice the hand painted brush strokes and the chunkiness of the pottery, contrasting with the delicate tree.
Clarice Cliff was born in 1899 in Stoke-on-Trent. She started work at the age of 13 in ‘The Potteries’. Ambitious and talented, by 1927 she ran her own studio.
Clarice was a game-changing designer and empowering feminist. She challenged the low wages of women and employed over 60 female painters in her studio.
Inspired by Art Deco, she played with shapes, creating triangular teacup handles, conical sugar shakers and rectangular plates — all at affordable prices.
Clarice Cliff died in 1972 having inspired future generations of artists across the world and revolutionised the life and work of women.
