George IV figure
Jane Hawley, Rose Holt, Sarah, 2001
Who is this magnificent figure? And why is he wrapped in a dragon? Can you see the scales of the dragon and the minarets of the Royal Pavilion?
This is George IV, and the original dragons can still be seen, curled around the chandeliers in the banqueting room of his home, the Royal Pavilion.
Although this wonderful model looks substantial, it is actually made of tissue paper and fabric on a wicker frame, so that it could be carried through Brighton.
For over 30 years, children in local schools have worked with artists to make themed sculptures for the annual Brighton Festival Children’s Parade.
It’s a noisy and colourful spectacle. Many models used to be burnt on the beach at the end of the parade.. but fortunately this George escaped that fate!
